Introduction to the Institute of Literature, History & Philosophy of Shandong University

    Shandong University is one of the oldest and prestigious universities in China. Its' predecessor, Shandong Grand School, was founded in 1901. Now, Shandong University is a national key comprehensive university directly supervised by Ministry of Education. It is among the first group of universities supported by "National Project 211" and a well-known high-level university supported by "National Project 985". In its over 100 years' history, Shandong University has derived the rich nutrition from Qilu culture and has nurtured a tradition that not only combines people-centered attitudes with academic excellence, but encourages a truth-seeking and pioneering spirit. Shandong University has been making unrelenting efforts to reform and innovate, to participate actively in social advancement, to search for scientific truth, to promote progress of human civilization, to execute open development strategy, innovation strategy for education and talented person strategy comprehensively, and to bring to its educational and cultural character an ever-more open mind and an always-ongoing pursuit of excellence. At present, Shandong University is one of the largest universities in China, and courses are offered in 11 main academic disciplines:philosophy, economics, law, literature, history, natural sciences, engineering, management, medicine, education and military. As an open and comprehensive university known at home and abroad, Shandong University has become an ideal place for the domestic and international students to learn and succeed.

    The institute of literature, history & philosophy of Shandong University was established in 2002. It was based on the integration of the original institute of literature, history & philosophy, the institute of ancient book arrangement, and the institute of folklore research. The present dean of the institute is Prof. Fu Yongjun, the secretary of the branch of the Committee Party is associate researcher Ba Jinwen, and the associate deans are Prof. Li Pingsheng, associate Prof. Song Kaiyu, and Prof. Du Zexun.

    Shandong University has been excelling in the literature and history research continuously. In the 1930s, as the famous and representative writers and scholars, Wen Yiduo, Liang Shiqiu, Yang Zhensheng, Laoshe, Shen Congwen, Hong shen once composed the magnificent chapters here. Since the 1950s, the research of Chinese classical literature and Chinese language philology represented by Feng Yuanjun, Lu Kanru, Gao heng, Xiao Difei, Yin Menglun, Yin Huanxian, and the research of ancient Chinese history represented by Ding shan, Zheng Hesheng, Huang Yunmei, Zhang Weihua, Yang Xiangkui, Tong Shuye, Wang Zhongluo, and Zhao Lisheng, have made Shandong University become a very important strength of literature and history research in China and overseas. Depending on these scholars, the journal of "literature, history & philosophy" pushed Shandong University's humanities and academic status to the summit. But along with profound vicissitude, Shandong University's literature and history research is also facing a tough challenge, same as the other domestic key universities. How to rekindle the former glory of literature and history research is a common topic for the leaders, teachers and students of Shandong University. The institute of literature, history & philosophy was founded precisely under this special background. The institute will shoulder the heavy historical responsibility which cannot be shirked and constitute a new point of growth of literature and history discipline in Shandong University.

    At present, the institute of literature, history & philosophy consists of 6 second-level research units including the research center of philosophy, the research center of folklore, the research center of ancient Chinese literature and the literary art, the research center of Chinese philology history, the research center of classical documentation, and the research center of historical theory and Chinese history. There are 2 independent doctoral degree programs in Chinese classical documentation and Chinese folk literature, 7 joint doctoral degree programs with other institutes in ancient Chinese literature, Chinese philology, historical theory and historiography, specialized history, modern and contemporary Chinese history, foreign philosophy, philosophy of science and technology, 3 first-level discipline post-doctoral mobile stations including philosophy, literature and history, 11 master degree programs in foreign philosophy, philosophy of  science and technology, folklore studies, Chinese folk literature, literary art, Chinese philology, Chinese classical documentation, ancient Chinese literature, historical theory and historiography, specialized history, modern and contemporary Chinese history. "Chinese classical documentation" has been authorized successively as Shandong Province's key subject and National key (cultivating) subject. "the research center of folklore" has been authorized as a Shandong Province's research base for non-material cultural heritage. In addition, there are 3 reference rooms in the institute, and the book collections are quite abundant.

    The institute of literature, history & philosophy has a group of excellent dedicated and learned teachers. It has 43 staffs including 19 professors, 10 associate professors, 7 lecturers. Among them, there are 12 doctoral advisors. The teachers with doctoral degrees account 67 percent of the teacher populations. There are more than 210 master degree and doctoral degree candidates.

    The central task of the institute of literature, history & philosophy is to engage in advanced academic research and to train high level graduate students. Since the establishment, the institute has made big progress in all disciplines, and become an important force on the research of philosophy and social sciences in Shandong University. It is also the main construction strength of Shandong University for "National Project 985" and "National Project 211". The studies including Chinese classical documentation, ancient Chinese literature, folklore studies, the history of Chinese philology, historical theory and historiography, foreign philosophy have won praise from the academic world by their profound abilities and innovative spirits. In recent years, the above disciplines have successively undertaken 43 key philosophy and social sciences research projects from the country, the Ministry of Education and Shandong Province. These studies have made remarkable academic achievements, formed unique research characteristic, and received widespread attention in the academic circle. In particular, documentation studies, folklore studies, the literature of Pre-Qin and two Han Dynasty, Du Fu studies and interpretation studies, and the research on Chinese interpretation, have won praise from the academic world by the profound abilities and rich innovation, and occupied leading positions in China and overseas.  

    The institute of literature, history & philosophy pays great attention to the foreign academic exchanges and the international cooperation. It has successively set up long-term academic exchanges and cooperation with universities or research institutes from France, America, Germany, Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong, Taiwan and so on. It has had substantive academic exchanges and signed cooperation agreements with the sinological institutes of 9 outside universities, which include the National Institute of Oriental Languages and Civilizations in Paris, University of Tokyo, Big East Cultural University of Japan, Chengjun Guan University of South Korea, Chang Yuan University of South Korea, Taiwan University of China, Yuan Zhi University, Shi Xin University, Fo Guang University. The institute also invites some outside scholars to wok as Professor Emeritus, Course Professor, Specially-invited Professor for mobile positions, Visiting Professor or Ajunct PhD Adviser.

    Shandong University excelling in the literature and history research has been a very important strength of literature and history research and received widespread attention at home and abroad. The institute of literature, history & philosophy has inherited the abundant academic accumulations and the truth-seeking academic character from Shandong University. The institute is implementing "open innovation" concept, diligently cultivating talented persons and working hard to develop scientific research. On the basis of the existing discipline superiority in literature and history, the institute will expand the innovative academic enterprise consistent with the international academic tidal current. Following the principle of "create what others don't have, strengthen what others have", the institute uses overlapping multidisciplinary superiority and displays superiority supplementary with other 3 institutes in Shandong University including the institute of literature, the institute of history and the institute of philosophy. Within a certain number of years in the future, the institute will try to become Shandong University's highest comprehensive research institute of philosophy and social sciences receiving wide attention at home and abroad, make certain disciplines or research directions to be situated in the domestic and international academic fronts or the leading positions, and become a very important strength of Chinese classical studies and prosperous areas of innovative and overlapping research of literature, history and philosophy.



Teaching and Research Centers


Research Center of  Philosophy

    The history of the Research Center of Philosophy in the Institute of Literature, History and Philosophy can be retrospect to the Teaching and Research Section of Natural Dialectics founded in 1978, which belonged to the Graduate School of Literature, History and Philosophy and was one of the earliest organizations of Philosophy of Science Technology in Chinese universities. In 2002, as the Institute of Literature, History and Philosophy was set up in Shandong University, the Research Center of Philosophy of Science Technology was established. And now, considering its development, the Research Center of Philosophy of Science Technology has been renamed the Research Center of Philosophy in 2008. Now the director in this research center of Philosophy is Professor Ma Laiping.

    The main research fields in this research center are the study of Philosophy of Science Technology and Foreign Philosophy. The noticeable feature in the relating field of Philosophy of Science Technology is mainly embodied in the aspect of "Science, Technology and Society". Professor Ma Laiping has published many influential academic works in Science Culture and Science Sociology, and hit his fame in academia. The research on science rationality and relativism by Dr Chang Chunlan is gradually attracting attention in the academic circle of Western Philosophy of Science. The distinct characteristic in the research of Foreign Philosophy is mainly embodied in "Critical Theory" , "Hermeneutics" , "German Classic Philosophy" and "Modern Jewish Philosophy". The research achievements by Professor Fu Yongjun have made great influences in academia, that include the research on the problem of Modernity in Critical Theory focusing on Habermas' Philosophy, the research on German Idealism focusing on Kant's Philosophy, the research on Modern Jewish Religion Philosophy focusing on Leo Baeck, the research on Western Hermeneutics, and the attempt to construct the subject of Chinese Hermeneutics.

    This research center keeps close cooperative relationship with the Philosophy Department in School of Philosophy and Social Development, Shandong University. Together with the Teaching and Research Sections of Foreign Philosophy and Philosophy of Science Technology in the Department above, this research center has constructed Master Degree Program and Doctoral Degree Program of Foreign Philosophy (qualified to confer Master Degree in 1986, Doctoral Degree in 2003) and Philosophy of Science Technology (qualified to confer Master Degree in 1998, Doctoral Degree in 2006), and postdoctoral research station of Philosophy (authorized in 2003). At present, this research center enrolls master candidates, doctoral candidates and postdoctoral researchers of Foreign Philosophy and Philosophy of Science Technology. The research directions in Doctoral Degree Program of Foreign Philosophy are Modern European Philosophy, Critical Theory and Western Marxism, Hermeneutics and Phenomenology, Western Political Philosophy, and Comparative study of  Chinese Philosophy and Foreign Philosophy; And the research directions in Doctoral Degree Program of Philosophy of Science Technology includes Science, Technology and Society, History of Chinese Modern Science and Technology, and Science Culture.


Research Center of Folklore

    Shandong University is one of earliest unit with its teaching and research of folklore in China. As early as 1980s when folklore study was rebuilt in China, folklore courses were given to the postgraduates in Shandong University. In 1984, the folklore teaching and research office was set up. In 1985 the academic journal of folkloreFolklore Studies began to issue. In 1987, the Folklore Research Center with its independent designation in Shandong University was set up. In 2002, the Research Center of Folklore was integrated into the Institute of Literature, History and Philosophy. Prof. Xu Jingze and Ye Tao used to be the director successively. The present director is Prof. Zhang Shishan.

    The research of folk literature in Shandong University has a long history. As early as 1930s, Mr. Wen Yiduo had already completed his mythology research while he worked as a teacher in this University. During 1950s, the courses of folk literature were as a pioneer taught to students. Prof. Guan Dedongs research in popular literature and Dunhuangnology made important influence in the international academia. Prof. Li Wanpeng's research in Chinese Quyi (Chinese folk art forms) and folk small dramas, Professor Yetao's research in Chinese opera folklore and Professor Zhang Shishans artistic folklore research are all unique in the domestic academia.

    In 1998, Shandong University became one of the first universities which obtained the master's degree conferral right for folklore. In 2002, Shandong University obtained the doctor's degree conferral right for Chinese folk literature. The doctoral program has three research directions: folk literature, the history of Chinese folk literature, folklore and folk narrative. Folk literature master program has four research directions: theory research of Chinese folk literature, the history of Chinese folk literature, Chinese popular literature and the history of Chinese popular literature, the research of the present folk literature.

    At present, there are 5 full-time researchers in this center as follows: Zhang Shishan, Ye Tao (chair professor), Li Hao, Diao Tongju, and Wang Jiahua. Among them, there are two professors, one associate professor and two lecturers. Prof. Ye Tao is the Vice Board Chairman of China Folklore Society and holds concurrently General Secretary of China Folklore Society, with his research directions of the basic folklore theories and folk literature, Chinese folk belief and regional folklore. Professor Zhang Shishan' research directions are the basic folklore theories and artistic folklore. Besides, there are several part-time researchers, such as Prof. Qi Tao, who is the Vice Board Chairman of China Folklore Society and Doctoral Supervisor, with his research directions of the Chinese folklore history and the history of ancient Chinese society; Prof. Liu Tieliang,  who is a famous scholar of folklore and folk literature and art, Doctoral Supervisor; Research Fellow Liu Delong and Prof. Liu Dezeng, who are master supervisors in this center.

    The teachers in this center are in charge of many national, provincial and ministerial or university scientific research projects. The investigating projects as follows: Research in Chinese Ancient Country Agnation (key task project of the Education Ministry); Social Transformation and Reconstruction of Spirits---- Research in North ChinaVillage folklore art of 20th Century (the artistic project of the national social science fund); Research in Marriage Relationship of Rural society of North China ( the youth projet of national social science fund) ; Mount Tai Worship and Chinese Society( a sub project of great subject of the Education Ministry)etc. Besides, they often cooperate with the scholars from Japan, Korea, Germany, Hong Kong and Taiwan to carry out field work, and also start relational research together. Chinese Folklore General Records, the key project of national publishing plan, is the biggest series of folklore culture. The editor in chief of the series is Professor Qi Tao and the subeditor is Professor Ye Tao. The series has been published in succession by Shandong Education Press since 2006.

    Folklore Studies, sponsored by Shandong University and editted by this center, is the only academic journal of folklore that is published in China. Folklore Studies was started in October 1985 and published domestically and abroad from 1988. The journal is one of CSSCI Original Periodicals and is also one of the core periodicals of Chinese humanistic social science, enjoying a good reputation in domestic and abroad academia. The editorial committee of Folklore Studies is made up of the domestic famous scholars. The director of the editorial committee is Professor Qi Tao. Professor Xujingze and Professor Li Wanpeng had successively served as the chief editor of the periodical. The present editor in chief is Professor Ye Tao.

    At present, the Folklore Research Institute is one of the first important bases, which carry out the research in intangible culture heritage in Shandong Province. Shandong Folklore Society is a titular academic organization in Shandong University and its Secretariat is located in this research center.  


Research Center of the ancient literature and literary art

    The history of this research center can be traced to Du Fu Research Center and the Research Center of Theory of Literature and literary Art originally in the institute of literature, history and philosophy authorized by the Ministry of Education in 1978. When the Institute of literature, history and philosophy, Shandong University, had been established in 2002, some the original members of Du Fu Research Center joined the research center of Han and Tang Dynasties Literature. The Research Center of Theory of Literature and Literary Art changed its name into the Research Center of Wen Xin Diao Long and China Esthetics. And now, in order to meet the needs of present situation and academic development, both of the centers above are merge into the Research Center of the Ancient Literature and Literary Art, Prof. Fu Heyuan is the Center director.

    This research center has six specialty researchers (2 professors, 3 associate professors and a lecturer). The specialized direction is concentrated in the literature and literary art and China ancient literature. The main characteristic in the literature and literary art domain is the research of literary esthetics, the esthetic culture and Wen Xin Diao Long. Prof. Fu Heyuan has obtained many academic fruits with original opinions and hit his fame in the research circle of ancient Chinese esthetics especially of calligraphy and painting art theory. Associate Prof. Zhou Jiwen has published many academic monographs and articles on the Western esthetics and the esthetic culture, which has made very good influences. Associate Prof. Qi Liangde aims mainly at the research of Wen Xin Diao Long and Chinese literary criticism history, his academic monographs and dozens of papers has taken an important position and made influences on the relevant research circle.

    In the ancient literature research area, the brightest characteristic is Tang Dynasty literature especially Du Fu studies. Shandong University is always the strategic place inside and outside China on Du Fu studies, Prof. Xiao Difei and Prof. Zhang Zhonggang is well known everywhere for their research achievement. Prof. Feng Jianguo is one of main researchers of the huge project known as "The Complete Works of Du Fu school note ". In recent years, his works and articles on Du Fu and the Tang Dynasty literature have aroused many interests and influence in the relevant academic circle. Associate prof. Zhao Ruicai aims mainly to research the Tang Dynasty literature and the relating social custom, his publications with high academic vision has attracted attention in the relevant research circle. Dr. Qi Wei has also published many academic works about the Tang Dynasty and ancient literature, and made some influences.

    This research center has been maintaining close cooperation with the Literary art Esthetics Research Center and the School of Literature and Press, Shandong University. At present, this center may recruit graduate students of the specialty of literature and literary art and ancient literature, the research direction includes: Aesthetics, aesthetic and cultural study, the history of literary criticism, Wen xin diao long, and the Tang Dynasty literature.


Research Center of Chinese Language History

    This research center is mainly engaged in the researches of Chinese language history and the relating areas, and the training work of graduate students as well. It has a long professional history. Since 1950s, lots of renowned senior scholars, such as Yin Menglun, Yin Huanxian, Jiang Weisong and Ji Changhong, have laid a solid foundation to the formation and development of the subject. Apart from the other academic field, this center makes Chinese language history as the main research direction, particularly focuses on the researches about the ancient and modern history of Chinese language, which has already set up its status and advantage in the academia.

    Professor Feng Chuntian exerts himself to the research of Chinese language history, especially Chinese diachronic grammar. He has published a number of monographs such as Research on Modern Chinese Grammar, Modern Chinese grammar study and Research on Grammar of Liaozhai Vulgar Verse, and issued a series of relevant academic papers. In addition, he also examined of the phrase of the Wenxiindiaolong and its interpretation of philosophy and cultural background, and published three books and many academic papers related to Wenxindiaolong, which play an important role in the relevant research field. As important members, Professor Sun Jianyi and Associate Professor Song Kaiyu participated in the writing of Chinese Dictionary, A Compendium of Chinese Dictionary, Dictionary of Chinese Title, A Dictionary Collecting all Poems of Tang Dynasty. Professor Sun Jianyi published Examination of Chinese Characters, Words and Morpheme. He was also the deputy editor-in-chief of Dictionary of Chinese Title. Associate Professor Song Kaiyu published a lot of monographs such as Interpretation of Geographical Names in Du Fu's Poetry , Researches on the Affix of Shandong Dialect in Ming and Qing Dynasties , Diary of Mr. Wu rulun, Set writings of Cao Zhenji(with others) and so on. He was also the deputy editor-in-chief of Dictionary of Chinese Title, A dictionary Collecting allPoems of Tang Dynasty and Dictionary of Dufu. In addition, they also issued a series of papers of Chinese diachronic vocabulary respectively. These papers made its impact in the academia. More than 10 academic achievements from this research center won their fame and prize. For example, Chinese Dictionary, Modern Chinese Grammar Study and Dictionary of Chinese Title were awarded the first prize of outstanding achievements of Social Sciences in Shandong Province; Research on Modern Chinese Grammar won the fifth Wang Li linguistics Award, which was set up by Beijing University. A dictionary Collecting all poems of Tang Dynasty was awarded the second prize of outstanding achievements of Social Sciences in Shandong Province and of the Chinese Institute of dictionaries. This research center has already taken charge of a number of national Social Science Fund project and Social Sciences Planning projects of the Ministry of Education and Shandong Province. At present, this research center still aims at doing good job of academic research and the training of graduate students based on the main research direction of Chinese language history and other academic exploration as well. Within several years, its specific research projects will be focused mainly on the History of Chinese Modern language and the researches of Shandong dialect in Ming and Qing Dynasties. To complete a series of works with scientific value and real academic influence, it is going to strengthen scientific concepts and expand academic horizons.


Research center of Chinese Classical Documentation

    The Research Center of Chinese Classical Documentation used to be the Institute of Ancient Books Coordination and Research of Shandong University founded in 1983 and has been incorporated into the Institute of Literature, History and Philosophy since 2002. It has  independent doctoral degree programs(since 1998)and master degree programs(since 1987)in Chinese classical documentation, and shares with School of Literature and Journalism doctoral and master degree programs in Chinese classical literature. The present director is Professor Zheng Jiewen. This research center has outstanding characteristics of learning in four fields as follows:(1) Coordination and research on documents and Confucian Classics in the double-Han Dynasties, with the focus of Lianghan Quanshu(Complete Works in the double-Han Dynasties ); (2) Large-scale collection, coordination and photocopy of rare books and documents of Shandong Province, with the focus of Collection of books and documents of Shandong Province; (3) Research on the learning history of Motsi, on the basis of Documentary Base of the learning history of Motsi; (4) Compilation and research of catalogue records in history books. This research center now has 7 full-time professors (5 of whom are doctor tutors), 3 full-time associate professors, 2 full-time lecturers; 9 part-time professors, 8 part-time associate professors and 6 part-time lecturers, 20 of whom have got doctor degree. In the practice of scientific research and teaching, this research center has formed three staff rooms with outstanding research characteristic, reasonable labor arrangement, significant products and sustainable development potential-Staff Room on Literature & History Documents,together with Unearthed Documents; Staff Room on Confucian Classics and Chinese Learning History; Staff Room on the Catalog & Editions of Documents, together with Regional Documents. The members combine an academic ladder of reasonable age structure and optimized academic structure as well, with domestically famous leading scholars or core scholars in each main age span, who have great academic potential and driving trend to ascend; now this research center is in charge of quite a few significant national or provincial research projects, the abundance of research fund which guarantees  its academic construction and development; till now, this research center has achieved academic products of high quality and great impact, academic essays published on journals of CSSCI scale increasing each year, revealed a good trend of development. In recent years, the members of this research center are in charge of 21 national or provincial research projects in total, research fund summing up to over 6 million RMB; have published 29 academic books and more than 220 academic essays, more than 80 of which are in CSSCI journals; have won 15 national, ministerial or provincial prices for outstanding products in social science, with 1 first-rate prize, 2 second-rate prize and 1 third-rate prize of Ministry of Education for outstanding products in social science; one thesis for doctorial degree was rated among the One Hundred Outstanding Thesis for Doctorial Degree of 2008.


Research Center of Historical Theory and Chinese History

    This research center mainly includes three research directions: historical theory, historiography and ancient Chinese history, modern Chinese history. They all have deep academic accumulations. Many academic achievements have produced extensive and lasting influence and widely recognized by the academic circle. This research center has the right to grant master and doctorate degree, and accepts post-doctoral researchers.

    The history of this research center began with the establishment of the research office of Chinese philosophical history in the early years. Prof. Ge Maochun, Prof. Jiang Jun and Prof. Li Xingzhi are the famous experts of the history of thought. Their books which were named "Modern Chinese historical treatise elections", "Modern Chinese philosophical history material collections", "The material collections on anarchism thought", "The material elections on Hu Shi philosophic thinking", "The modernization process of Chinese history", "Modern Chinese anarchism trend", have produced lasting academic influence. The research of ancient Chinese history especially the research of Qin-Han Dynasty has a solid foundation. Prof. Meng Xiangcai published more than ten books including "Biography of Wang Mang", "Critical biography of Liu Bang", "Pre-Qin and Qin-Han Dynasty historical treatise", "The history of Chinese political system", and "The history of thought and culture of Qi-Lu". Also, the center supported adjunct Prof. Zhang Jinguang to publish his book "The research of Qin Dynasty's system".

    At present, the research of historical theory and the research on 20th century's Chinese academic thinking history are in the subject frontier and receive the widespread attention in the academic world. Prof. Wang Xuedian has published five monographs including "Historical destiny of historicism trend", "Commentary on Chinese history of 20th century", "Critical biography on Jian Bozans academic thoughts" and so on. Also, he has published many papers in the professional journals such as "Social Sciences in China" and "Historical research". All of his monographs and papers have the pioneering academic opinion. At the same time, the young scholars including Chen Feng, Li Yangmei and Yang Hua have made progresses in their research fields.

    Prof. Zhang Fuxiang's research accomplishments on the cultural history of ancient Chinese, the historiography, the history of thought and the historical documentary studies reflect the strength of historiography and the ancient Chinese history research of the institute. He has published some books including "The proofreading and research of 'Lin Tai' story", "The Southern Song dynasty's Guan Ge' record and continues record", "The research on Song dynasty's documentary", "The general history of the Qi-Lu's culture" et. . These books and the papers published in "Social Sciences in China" have developed the research area and have the possibility to become new point of growth with the cooperation of classical documentary studies and the research of historical theory.

    The research of modern and contemporary Chinese history is a new research direction. The study on the modern and contemporary academic thinking history led by Prof. Wang Xuedian is the main direction, and the research on the modern economic history and social history is also strengthened. The study on economic history and social history led by Prof. Li Pingsheng is based on the books "The economy of great rear area in Sino-Japanese War", "The old and famous shops in Shandong", and a series of papers. This study focuses on the questions such as the early modernization of Chinese economy, the culture of Chinese old and famous shops, and the modern economic history of Shandong.
